A rise in petrol prices, thanks to brent crossing the 70USD mark in January 2018, is causing residents of the UAE to shy away from large SUV’s and trucks. For decades, petrol prices were heavily subsidized and with UAE’s vision of retracting from fossil fuel and into renewable energy, the low fuel prices have become a thing of the past.
In Jan 2018 the price for Special 95 and Super 98 was AED 2.12 and AED 2.49 respectively and poised to increase further in February. A full tank of petrol for large SUVs and trucks are upwards of AED 180 these days, quite a significant jump which has been further catapulted by an extra 5%, thanks to the recently introduced VAT.
